AIGA Atlanta - Foundations of Typeface Design: The Noordzij Stroke Model
Nov 16th, 1:00 p.m. - 5:00 p.m. @ Online Workshop
Gerrit Noordzji identified the stroke of the pen as the central idea in the making of letterforms. His model is influential in type design education around the world. Graphic designers, illustrators, and typeface designers have found the Noordzij model beneficial in producing better letterforms in less time.
In this 3-hour online workshop, you will learn the Noordzij model of the stroke. In a series of lectures and exercises, you will learn the foundation skills to adjust existing typefaces and create your own lettering or fonts for your particular needs. After an initial historical overview of the Noordzij model, you will practice using the font editor Glyphs to design fonts that apply the Noordzij stroke model to common graphic design problems - exercises will be provided to you at the workshop.

Design for Good & UX Book Club (Post-Election Edition) - Leverage Point
Nov 19th, 9:00 p.m. - 10:00 p.m. @ Online Workshop
Join us for a casual discussion on Zoom of the short paper, Leverage Points by Donella Meadows. You do not need to read to join! We’ll also talk about systems thinking and its relevance to UX, and support and empower each other. Sign Up on EventBrite Here.
What are we talking about?
Post-election self-empowerment of the design community and beyond.
The short paper defines twelve specific, prioritized “leverage points” where a small shift in one thing can produce big changes in everything.
Systems thinking - bring your experiences, questions, and resources.
Why are we talking about it?
Regardless of the outcome of the election, it can feel minimizing to be an individual within a larger system. Let’s talk about practical ways to empower ourselves and our community.
TUSCANS. Some intriguing questions over this singular ornamental type style
Nov 25th, 12:30 p.m. - 2:00 p.m. @ Online Workshop
Tuscan letterforms can be subtle or extravagant, sumptuous or delicate, but in an inexplicable way this very singular genre populates streets and typographic catalogs of all times. A product of decorative ingenuity, Tuscan vernaculars dress the street signs of Mexico as much as the stained glass windows of Paris, the “porteño” filleting of Buenos Aires signs or the hulls of fishing boats in the waters of the Amazon. But where do Tuscan letters come from? Are they just another expressive addition to the decorative sections in type founders and printers’ catalogs? Is it possible that they were born from a mischievous interpretation of Roman inscriptions engraved in stone? These and other questions will be raised — not necessarily answered! We will also be delighted with some images of Tuscan vernaculars of certain places.
Dusting off the blackletter types with Dan Reynolds
Dec 2nd, 12:30 p.m. - 2:30 p.m. @ Online Workshop
Despite being virtually unknown today, the blackletter typefaces cast between the 15th and 20th centuries exhibited a tremendous variety in letterform design. What had initially been a handful of styles common throughout the European territories home to the Latin script became increasingly associated with German speakers, first because of Lutheran Protestantism and later because of increasing nationalism and the formation of nation-states. Aside from the “Old English” variety most commonly used in England and by the British diaspora, the letterforms in many historic blackletter seem virtually indecipherable at first. That is especially true for the uppercase letters in the predominant typographic variants, Schwaber and Fraktur. This hour-long primer for typical blackletter styles—especially those that unfolded in German-speaking Europe, where there was the most experimentation—will make those letterforms feel more familiar and show which traditions might be most ripe for revival in the 21st century.
